Start overseeding your weather beaten pastures now

Spring is finally in the air. Last year was very challenging. We went from a wet winter into what felt like a never ending drought with areas of the UK experiencing little or no rainfall between April-August. It’s been another winter of heavy rainfall, with many areas suffering from more flooding and waterlogged fields.

We are certainly hoping for a much improved weather window this spring! As the ground temperatures begin to warm we’ll soon be able to start overseeding and patching up damaged swards. It's important to remember not to rush, soil temperatures for grasses need to be 5 degrees and above and for legume/herb based mixtures the temperature needs to be 7 degrees and on the rise!

Grazing or cutting hard and hitting hard with the harrows is important. The sward needs to open with plenty of space for the new seeds to establish. Germination is assisted greatly by rolling with Cambridge rolls or a heavy flat roller. This provides good contact between the small grass seed and soil particles.
