Sam has been travelling the length and breadth of the country giving more talks on the benefits of green manures, cover crops and soil health as part of GREATsoils - Growing Resilient, Efficient and Thriving Soils. This ongoing programme of soil viability and farm health workshops is organised by the Soil Association in conjunction with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) to support growers to manage the health of their soils.
On Wednesday last week Sam was at Pollybell Farms near Doncaster, one of the largest growers of organic and conventional vegetables and cereals in the UK. And then on Thursday Sam travelled down to Sittingbourne in Kent to the Monitor Farm Event to give a talk on the ‘Pros and Cons of Cover Crops and experimental research’. AHDB’s Monitor Farms brings together groups of like-minded farmers to share mutually beneficial critical performance information and other speakers at this event included Paul Cobb from the Campaign for the Farmed environment, Charlotte White from ADAS and Mark Bowsher-Gibbs, Estate Manager.
Sam’s presentation covered topics including the importance of investing in soil, building soil fertility into the rotation, and how diversity leads to increased organic matter.
