1st Cut Silage - Getting the Job Done!

In the last two weeks we have seen plenty of silage being cut. Local farmer and contractor Alan Smith cut Italian ryegrass on the 22nd May. The two year Italian ryegrass ley was planted the autumn before last and is now in its second year. The first cut has been taken to go into the clamp and this high yielding, high quality crop will be good for two more cuts this year.  The second cut will be taken for hay and the third will be used to top up the silage pit.  When the weather’s right it doesn't take long to get the job done. The farm has recently invested in a Lely Lotus 15m tedder (almost 50 feet!)  for spreading out and rowing up the grass, giving the team high capacity and the ability to cover the ground quickly, allowing them to get the crop safely under cover as quickly as possible.
