This is over head height 🐝!!
@thebugfarm recently shared their pics of a @cotswoldseeds herbal leys they’ve let go rampant 🤩.
Featuring chicory, plantain, red and white clovers, birdsfoot trefoil, yarrow plus some grasses, they sowed this field around 5 years-ago and let it self-seed in year 2.
The field has since grown two crops of wheat and is used in the winter for the cows 🐄.
Amazingly, the herbal ley doesn’t compete with the wheat, but grows up when the wheat is harvested as if it were freshly sown 🌱.
They are giving the field a break from growing wheat this year and took the cows off in spring. Up it grew again - no seeding or cultivating at all. The cows have grazed it twice this summer already - it just keeps growing and is providing a banquet for the pollinators!
As well as being full of insects and birds, these leys are incredibly drought-resistant too. Where grass fields are now brown and crispy, this field is still green! Plus the clovers fix nitrogen into the soil - win, win!
📸 Thank you to @thebugfarm for your post and photos!
