Fast & Vast High Clover One - Two Year Ley
This short term ley is for those wishing to produce a large amount of forage with little or no nitrogen fertiliser. Yields are high, especially on rich, moist soils and the majority of crops are made into silage. In addition to red clover, the mixture also contains crimson clover and vetch which increase yield over a short period of time. It can be relied upon for one full year of production or left down for cutting again in the second, the silage will consist mainly of ryegrass and red clover. br> br>On light soils in dry districts autumn sowings should be made in preference to spring sowings as these will have well established roots capable of better growth in dry seasons.

This is a short lived grass lasting for two years. It is very high yielding and reliably provides up to 18t DM per hectare on soils that suit it. (All ryegrasses yield less on light soils, especially in low rainfall areas.) It has a very open growth habit with fewer tillers than other grasses. It is therefore better suited to cutting than grazing. Italian ryegrass has been the subject of plant breeding for many years, which means there are a wide range of varieties available commercially.
Red clover is one of the most popularly used true clovers in the UK. Once established it’s capable of rapid growth and shows reasonably good persistence up to three years, although ongoing breeding work is being carried out to increase plant persistence. The highest yielding strains of red clover are called 'double cut' varieties, normally providing quick regrowth after cutting and several flushes or cuts per season. The 'single cut' strains of red clover, notably the variety altaswede provide one large cut per season, flowering approximately 10 days later than the 'double cut' strains.
